Expecations vs. Reality: Your First Month at Krav Maga Maryland

For someone who has never tried Krav Maga, it can seem intimidating at first – we get that. If you do a quick Google search for Krav Maga, you’ll probably find videos of fit men and women doing what look to be advanced moves, punches, throws, and just looking all-around scary. But that’s not the full story. Nor is what you’ll walk in and do in your first class. Whether you’re coming from a martial arts background, gym/fitness background, or no background at all, here’s a glimpse into what your first day, weeks, and month at Krav Maga Maryland could look like – if you just take the leap:

First, you’ll talk to a Krav Maga Maryland representative, who will walk you through what a typical Krav experience looks like: What a class entails, membership options, fancy equipment you’ll need (hint: none), etc. Then, they’ll set you up for a free intro class – because we don’t expect you to sign up for a membership for something you’ve never experienced in person before.

Next, you’ll come in for your free class. You’ll be in a real class with real Krav Maga Maryland members, taught by real instructors – it’s not a special promo class just to get you signed up. That’s not how we operate. As an intro class, this experience will allow you to see what a typical Krav Maga class is like so you can decide whether it’s right for you.

So what is typical?
• Class starts out with a warmup (and just in case you’re curious, we don’t bow to a sensei like many other martial arts classes).
• Students typically come in comfortable but functional workout clothes and sneakers, and you have the option to change in one of our locker rooms if you prefer.
• Classes last one hour, except for workshops, which are longer.
• All classes are taught by certified Krav Maga instructors, who walk you through each move and help you maintain proper (and safe) form throughout.
• If you’d like to see a detailed class schedule, click here or check out our Facebook page (we also offer special events and seminars throughout the year).

After your first class, the next step is up to you. We have multiple programs for students with different wants and needs. Whether you’re hooked and want to come 4-5 days a week or you want to start out with just a few classes a month, we’ll work with you to find the right fit.

Still feeling a little intimidated by the whole process? So was long-time Krav Maga Maryland student Mike E. when he first signed up – but that all quickly changed. Here’s his story:

At first it was terrifying. I remember partnering with a big guy, a little bigger than I am now, for straight punches. He was hitting the pad so hard I (kind of) jokingly asked why he was so mad at me. I had also never heard of a burpee before. We were supposed to do ten and I could only do one.  But I kept coming. And I started to get it.

Before long, I was coming to class 3, 5, 7, and as many as 15 times a week…[Now,] I'm in better shape than ever. In the last four years, I started playing tennis again. I rode two 100-mile bike rides on the Eastern shore. I ran a half-marathon. I lost a total of about 100 pounds. I have confidence like I've never had in my life. I've made some great friends with both students and instructors at Krav. It's very clear that the Krav Maga Maryland staff cares about their students, and I'm proud to be one.

Interested in giving Krav Maga a try? You don’t have to come with special powers, experience, or expensive moisture-wicking microfiber workout gear. Just bring yourself and come ready to try your hardest. And we’ve got you covered with T-shirt options.

In addition to a free intro class, we’re offering new students 50% off of enrollment if you mention this blog!
